Wilder Girls Book Review

Hetty and her classmates at Baxter survive off of little food and hope for a cure. They were quarantined at their school due to a terrible infection called Tox. It invades their bodies and causes horrific and painful transformations. For some, it drives them into a killing rage and they must be put down. When Hetty is given the chance to see beyond her school, it causes her to question everything they have lived by.

The struggle to survive is ingrained in the pages of this story. Readers will see young women forced to endure horrible conditions and enact tragedies just to survive. This is a heartbreaking book that shows how hope decays over time. Yet the oldest of girls still try to remain positive for the younger years.

The Tox has created a sense of trauma bonding among Hetty and her friends. They are constantly on alert for the development of the Tox in their bodies and doing everything they can to be with them when the pain starts. They never know what will happen, just that it is bad. The prolonged sense of dread and escalation of the girls' conditions create the perfect conditions for this horror novel.

Amongst all they have to endure, desperate decisions are made, and in the end, there are terrible regrets. When all a person has left is those around them, they will do anything to maintain their friends, even if it means dooming everyone else in the process.

Wilder Girls is a definite read for those who enjoy horror that instills a creeping sense of dread and hopelessness. The pacing is fantastic, blending in the past in small bits to let the reader gradually discover how the quarantine began, as the characters themselves work towards discovering what is happening to them. Excellent read.
