Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors Book Review
When the KCQ guild is busted for illegal activities, Kit is dragged into MPD custody with quite a load of charges. But the MPD needs Kit’s help to track down another guild member, one with crippling abilities and a plan to use them in a devastating way. Yet agreeing to help them doesn’t mean Kit won’t be planning his escape as he does.
Kit Morris is a hilarious yet damaged character. He uses sarcastic humor to deflect and avoid tough situations. He also has survival instincts driving him to run when situations grow dire. Living among people who never wanted to understand who he was, or what his magical abilities were made Kit learn at a young age to depend on only himself. When he joins the KCQ guild, sure his use of abilities might be pushing the boundaries of legal, but for the first time in his life he feels accepted.
The hints at romance are quite apparent in Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors, whereas the previous novels in the Guild Codex series were more subtle and built up over time. While romance still does not remain the main focus of the plot, the emotions don’t feel natural. Most situations the characters found themselves in were not conducive to having their minds wander into inappropriate places.
However, this novel does have a wealth of world-building on the MPD. The magical police force is a background threat in both Demonized and Spellbound. To give faces and meaning to their presence by dedicating a series to the organization is a great idea. Having a character like Kit who is the opposite of everything the MPD public relations has shown so far creates an interesting twist. There is a wealth of potential for this series and fans of urban fantasy.
