The Discarded Knight Book Review
Thank you to Andrew Johnston for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!
Born different from those around him, Alfred is exiled to stay within his home and never leave. Loneliness is his constant companion and he yearns to make connections and friendships. While Alfred seeks the approval of his father, the man barely grants him the time of day. Instead, he taunts and torments the young boy, setting him up for failure. Hope dares to appear for Alfred when he finally convinces his father to allow him to attend school. Yet it is the beginning of the end as the bullying continues outside his home. Deemed a failure, Alfred’s father banishes him to a place he may never return from.
The Discarded Knight uses the idea of another dimension to merge people of various times together in a medieval setting. As Alfred learns the truth behind everyone’s path to the discarded realm and the startling truth of his own existence, fantastical elements also reveal themselves. The concept of this merger of worlds is unique and fun, yet a little more world-building would have helped enhance the reader’s experience.
The toxic relationship between Alfred and his father is truly heartbreaking. Alfred is a kind soul, and fully capable of great things, yet his father refuses to see past his differences. Alfred redoubles his efforts to learn and grow, yet it is never enough. When he is sent to another dimension he is at his lowest point. Yet this is where his character truly begins to develop as he takes on the hopes of those in the other dimension and becomes determined to save them all.
Alfred is a wonderful character to follow. He falls far and has much to learn, yet his character development never falters. The Discarded Knight exposes cruelty to those who are different, yet also shows how the love and support from family make the world a better place.
