Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Book Review

Simon has only told one other person he’s gay. Using a pen name, he and another student at his high school have been sharing emails about the challenges they face. Even if their names are hidden to protect themselves, Simon at least has one person who understands what he is going through. But when he accidentally leaves his email account open, someone finds Simon’s secret. And threatens to tell the entire school if he doesn’t help him win favor with one of Simon’s friends.

Simon is put in an awful position. The added threat of his sexual identity going public before he is ready put my heart on edge. It’s hard enough coming out when the world isn’t kind, let alone the potential of being forced. And for him to also deal with the lack of understanding and abuse from the other student was horrible. But it also exposes the possibility of what could happen outside the novel. Readers aren’t supposed to feel good about what Simon is experiencing.

Painting another side to the story are the emails exchanged between Simon and Blue. One where Simon has a friend whom he can confide in.. The relationship between the two blossoms as the story progresses. It’s absolutely adorable how they begin to flirt with one another and hint at the possibility of being more. Readers will cheer them on as Simon grows bolder and bolder, falling ever farther for Blue. Yet, there is always the risk Blue might not want him if his identity is discovered.

The mystery of who Blue is will drive readers into this story. Amidst the drama and hardship Simon faces, they will hope for Simon to find his happiness. And along the way, readers will see how his friends love Simon no matter what. They each play an important role in his life and form the support he needs.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is a must read for readers who enjoy young adult fiction. Yes, there are going to be tough to read situations that will make the reader uncomfortable. Simon experiences heartbreaking moments, but there is also adorable romance and heartfelt friendship.
