Thank you to Naomi Shibles for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!
Counterblow Clemency is a plot forward book, making it a fast-paced read jumping from one action to the next. Readers will begin with Bjorn being rebellious against parents who would rather social climb than spend time with their son. But when drinking down copious amounts of collectible wine goes south, Bjorn and his companions find themselves targets of an unknown assailant.
As the group escapes from bad situations continually worsening, there is a sense of mystery surrounding the occurrences. Readers will be in the dark as to who is chasing the trio as the writing focuses on their escape attempts. However, being plot focused, there is less time spent developing the characters and experiencing their emotional reactions to the scenes. The rivalry between Bjorn and Murgatroyd would have been delightful to see fully realized and fleshed out with a history to build upon.
However, Counterblow Clemency does spend time solidifying the friendship between Bjorn and Doodle. It will unveil how they met and their bond, giving readers more tension to indulge in when they are put into tight situations.
Taking place in a dystopian sci-fi setting, readers who enjoy painting their own imagery to accent settings and technology will enjoy Counterblow Clemency. It is a plot driven novel with less emphasis on character backgrounds and development, but capitalizes on quick moving scenes and action.
