Book Talk | What I'm a Sucker for in Books | Blog Challenge

This wonderful blog challenge originated over on Spells and Spaceships. To see Alex's original post click here. And Fantasy Book Nerd has challenged me to tell you all what I'm a sucker for in the books I read. To find his post click here.

What exactly makes me say, yes this is the book for me? Can anyone take a guess? Anyone?

It is....

Sarcasm

At first I was going to gush over my favorite character tropes, and then I realized at the bottom of it all, I love sarcastic humor. Everyone one of my favorite characters has a sharp tongue. I was that kid with parents who didn't understand sarcasm, so I embraced it to confuse them at all times.

Kate Daniels

Kate Daniel's been raised to be a living weapon, and her wit is as sharp as her sword. She goes toe to toe with some nasty monsters, and never backs down. In the middle of battle she and her partner taunt each other and trade comebacks. Almost all the characters in this series are sarcastic and I loved every minute of it.

I also tend to associate sarcastic characters with those who are more independent. People who don't let others push them around and are willing to go above and beyond the norm. And Kate Daniels definitely hits the mark as a badass character who will fight with every last breath.

What can I say? Sarcasm means I'm hooked. But see it's not just the sarcasm that comes from tough as nails characters. There's also that certain brand of it that comes from the broken characters. The ones who use it as their own weapon to cover up any weaknesses they have. May I introduce you to.....

Shamus Flynn (Shame)

Shame makes his first appearance as a solid secondary character in book three of the Allie Beckstrom series, Magic in the Shadows. He's a death magic user and you can imagine the trauma that goes with death magic. Needless to say, drinking might just take the edge off. And Shame has dark humor that pairs well with it.

Shame very rarely let's his guard down. It kinda goes hand in hand with death surrounding him. He is my utmost favorite secondary character because of his personality. And even though he hides behind his sarcasm, he does care about a few people enough to throw himself the fire to save them.

Tell me, do you have any reads with have highly sarcastic characters? I'd love to check them out!

Good Omens features a lot of sarcastic conversations between angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley.
